Enhanced Articulated Tug-Barge
The Maybank-Kawasaki Enhanced Articulated Tug-Barge (MK-EATB) Program is a pioneering design approach to a conventional but traditionally problematic concept for improving barge transport operations. This innovation can (1) revitalize the American Merchant Marine, (2) offer versatile and cost-effective shipping options to international markets, and (3) provide a flexible capability for governmental transoceanic and coastal sealift requirements.
The MK-EATB system couples the tug and barge in a unique manner by overcoming engineering limitations that were previously insurmountable. This revolutionary and patented design breakthrough enhances combined tug-barge speed, maneuverability, stability and operational employment options. The MK-EATB is adaptable for Jones Act short-sea service and can provide a lower cost U.S. flag seaborne transportation alternative to more expensive tanker or cargo shipping. Its multi-purpose and cargo friendly design is uniquely relevant to critical and rapidly evolving military and humanitarian missions as well as commercial maritime industry applications.
